How often should you clean your gutters in Nova Scotia?

Check your gutters and downspouts at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and clear debris as needed. Check again after severe weather. The right cleaning schedule depends on how quickly material collects at your home.

You don’t need to wait for water to spill over the edge before thinking about your gutters. A simple seasonal reminder makes this job easier to keep track of, especially if getting up a ladder is something you’d rather leave to someone else.

A simple spring-and-fall routine

The Government of Canada recommends checking eavestroughs and downspouts in both spring and fall, with more frequent checks after severe storms, heavy rain or high winds.

  • Spring: check what has collected and whether water is draining properly.
  • Fall: plan a check around leaf fall, and arrange removal of accumulated debris.
  • Between visits: pay attention to overflow or water collecting near the foundation.

This is a starting point, rather than a promise that two visits will suit every house. If debris is building up again between seasonal checks, bring the next cleaning forward.

What if the gutters are overflowing?

A blocked gutter or downspout can affect drainage. Cleaning is one part of keeping roof runoff moving away from your home. If overflow continues after debris is removed, the gutter system may need assessment by a suitable repair or installation specialist.

Nova Scotia’s home-maintenance checklist also recommends removing gutter and downspout debris and looking for sagging or damaged components.

What can you check without climbing?

From a safe place on the ground, note where water spills over during rain and whether it pools near the house. Take photos if you can do so safely. These observations help explain the problem when arranging a visit; they won’t show everything inside the gutter.

If ladder work is uncomfortable or access is awkward, arrange help. You don’t need to climb up to take close-up photos for our quote request.

Should you wait until all the leaves have fallen?

For a home with leafy trees nearby, a cleanup after the main leaf drop can be a practical choice. But if you have already noticed overflow or a suspected blockage, mention that when booking instead of simply waiting for every tree to be bare.

In Nova Scotia, choose timing around the conditions at your property rather than one fixed calendar date. Tell your service provider if trees are still dropping heavily, if access becomes difficult later in the season, or if you have a deadline in mind. That gives them a better basis for suggesting a visit.

If you live elsewhere, use the same approach: match the reminder to your local leaf fall and weather, then adjust it to what you find.

Keep a short record for next season

You don’t need a complicated maintenance plan. After a cleaning, save the date and a few notes in your phone or calendar:

  • Which parts of the house had the most buildup?
  • Did you notice any overflow before the visit?
  • Were there access problems or areas needing a separate repair?
  • When would it make sense to check again?

At your next visit, compare those notes. A property that fills up quickly may need a different routine from one that stays relatively clear. Your own maintenance history is more useful than copying a neighbour’s schedule without checking your house.

Requesting gutter cleaning around Annapolis Royal

When you contact Valley Labour, tell us your address, the number of storeys, any access difficulties and what you’ve noticed. Ground-level photos of the house and affected areas are useful. Let us know if you’d also like a spring or fall yard cleanup.

It also helps to say when the gutters were last cleaned, whether guards are fitted, and whether you need a particular area checked. You do not need exact gutter measurements to start the conversation. Ask what the estimate covers, including debris cleanup and downspout checks, so you can compare the agreed work rather than just a price.

We’ll review the job and our availability, explain the agreed scope and provide an estimate before scheduling. Read our gutter-cleaning service details for more about the work.
